Reconstitution

The miller's house was reconstructed in the family home where the present miller, Joseph Markey, grew up! It was his initiative that gave rise to the idea of refurbishing it in the image of what it was during his childhood.

It was with great heart that Joseph Markey renovated the house that his parents, Michel and Clara Markey, had bought in 1938 with the aim of creating a home and seeing their offspring grow up there.

For two years, the miller remodelled the interior of the house in order to give visitors to the Steenmeulen site a slice of the past of 20th century rural life in the North, and more specifically of life in French Flanders.

The result of his efforts was inaugurated in September 2014, during the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Steenmeulen in the company of Michel and Clara Markey, whose features were reproduced by Bruno Dehondt, a passionate automaton craftsman from the Gigottos workshop in Esquelbecq.

Come and visit them, they will tell you all about their past life!
